Have you ever stopped to think of the terms they use in Sci-Fi?  Don't get me wrong, language shifts are very important to establish the show is happening in the future and to demonstrate that there has been progress in the inverviening years.  A lot of these are merely inflationary...

Like why do they call their portable scanners tricorders?  Well, thy are data recorders, only instead of cording twice, they cord three times,  boom 'tricorder'.

Same with Dilithium, tridimentional chess and quadrotriticale.

Watching Star Trek and other Sci-Fi  must be very different in England, as the Queen's English seems to be the source of several 'futuristic' terms:

For example:

You will find that England is completely devoid of elevators, instead they are called 'lifts'.  Which makes turbolifts sound a lot less cool.

Mechanics in England in general do not refer to wrenches, instead they have spanners.  In Star Trek engineers use hydrospanners, which now sound like little more than a hydraulic wrench.
